natural cleaning for the home

Natural cleaning products are becoming more popular, and with good reason. The best natural cleaning products are better for the environment, better for your health and your family. They also create less waste than traditional cleaning products.

Australians are continuing to adapt to more sustainable practices at home. And we’re no different.

I made a promise to myself that in 2020 I would make our household more environmentally friendly. We’re now using a food scraps bin. We’ve significantly cut back on the plastic we bring into our home. We’ve started a vegetable garden. We’re recycling way more than previously.

I’ve been doing some research on the best natural cleaning products. And now I can share the ones that I’m using to keep my home sparkling fresh while reducing my impact on the environment.

Read on for more information in this article. And you can hear about my recommendations in this episode of my home, lifestyle and interior design podcast ‘At Home with Lauren Keenan‘.

BENEFITS OF NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS

A lot of traditional cleaning products are really good at cleaning. But they can also be really harsh on your skin and your health. They’re not good for breathing in because they can trigger asthma, leave burns or worse if someone was to ingest them. Some traditional chemical cleaning products can even damage surfaces you’re cleaning if you don’t follow the instructions carefully.

Green cleaning products shouldn’t contain hazardous chemicals, so they’re likely to pose fewer health risks. They won’t use things like things like perfumes or synthetic fragrances, ammonia, bleach, dyes or other chemicals that can inflame or irritate. So they are also typically much safer. And more suitable to use around people with weak immune systems or health conditions.

STRONG ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES

Another benefit of natural cleaning products is that brands in this category tend to have strong environmental values. And that means taking action as well as talking the talk.

Some brands take that commitment so seriously that they look beyond their product. Doing really interesting things like reduce waste from their packaging or profit-sharing with charities. You’re just less likely to find that with most supermarket brands.

Koala Eco makes a donation to One Percent for the Planet with every purchase. And every purchase from Nontre’s Rainforest Collection results in a tree being planted in bushfire affected parts of Australia.

Another thing I like is that you can cut down on unnecessary waste by choosing a multi-use cleaning product. So instead of having various sprays for glass, kitchens, bathrooms, and more, look for natural cleaning products that can be used in a range of applications. Australian company KOH has a really good product in this category.

THE BEST NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS TO TRY

Here are some of my favourite sustainable cleaning products. These recommendations aren’t sponsored. I just really like the products and believe in the companies that sell them.

The Dirt Company

Australian made eco-laundry detergent, Dirt has it all. It’s cheaper per load than the supermarket brands. It’s made from 100% biodegradable ingredients and smalls amazing. And the packaging is glass. I’ve been using it for a while now and I’m super impressed with how well it cleans my clothes.

Biome

Biome sells a huge range of the best natural cleaning products you could ever need. You’ll love their cleaning items for the kitchen. Think timber and plant bristle brushes and plastic-free sponges. You’d be surprised how easily plastic can creep into your kitchen. Biome has a sustainable solution for every household task.

Koala Eco

Put your hand up if you’ve ever almost given yourself an asthma attack while cleaning the bathroom? Yes! Me too! Not only are the chemical fumes bad for you, but they are also bad for the environment. And many bathroom cleaning products contain nasty micro-plastics that end up in our oceans.

And that’s why I love Koala Eco so much. Their natural bathroom cleaning products are the best. They have amazing native Australian ingredients, and the best part is – they actually work! Look out for the Multi-purpose Bathroom Cleaner and the glass cleaner.

And if you’d like to talk some more about creating a more sustainable home, then drop me a line. It’s something I’m really focussing on and I’m always looking for new ways to be cleaner and greener at home!
